Prior to this verse in Colossians, Paul lists sins believers shun because we know we are dearly loved by our Savior Jesus Christ. These evil deeds separate us from the Lord and will ultimately cause our spiritual death.
Paul goes on to say, because we want our lives to bring Glory to God, we're motivated by a higher purpose—Heavenly pursuits—rather than those of this world.
Did Paul say to keep our eyes on the works and deeds checklist ... if we don't score high enough, it's curtains for us? Nope. Nor does the Bible say "it's all about the works-based boxes. Leave no box unchecked."
There isn't a list of works. But the privilege of serving the King of Kings and Lord of Lords motivates and fills us with overflowing thanksgiving. We choose to live a powerful, hope-filled life now that all those ugly, heavy sin stains Paul mentioned were removed and redeemed by the Blood of the Lamb. And everything ahead of us, the all-inclusive "whatever," is our joyful gift to Him.
Ready to serve the Lord with thanksgiving today? Good, because He rejoices over you (Zeph. 3:17)!
Thank you for sharing this. Each day we have the opportunity to renew our choice to live a hope-filled life for Him:)
These are great thoughts, Marie. I'm glad it's not curtains for us if we don't have all the boxes perfectly checked off. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
