A story spread centuries ago about a hen who thought the sky was falling. She expressed her concern to others who became equally distraught about the problem. Various versions of this tale traveled throughout Europe, and variety of animals were added in its retelling.
The Brothers Grimm may have been the first to set the story in print in the early 19th century. Or was it Just Mathias Thiele’s Scandinavian version that was published in Dutch in 1823?
Known by several different names, the British called the tale Henny Penny; Americans titled the story Chicken Little (v. Chicken Licken). In each account, a chicken believes the sky is falling and successfully convinces others of their impending doom.
Some say this story borders on paranoia and mass hysteria. A frightening reiteration includes a wolf who joins the chicken’s friends on their journey to apprise the king of this dilemma. Cunning as the wolf is, he leads these potential do-gooders to his lair where he then has a feast.
Talk about taking advantage of a situation (no good crisis goes to waste)!
An article used for research purposes states the nazi regimen used the premise of this tale, crying unjust hoopla and alarm re their new brilliant government. Conversely, the U.S. government cited Chicken Little in their anti-nazi campaign to discredit nazism. Then, as many predicted, bombs, not acorns, fell from the sky. And a crazed wolf led millions of innocent people to their death, and millions more gave their all for freedom’s sake.
Have things changed much since this tale first circulated? Do we have greedy evildoers inciting fear and working to trap innocents?
I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. (John 16:33, NIV)
From the lyrics in their 2014 song, “Just Be Held,” Casting Crown sings ... “Your world's not falling apart, it's falling into place.”
Anne Graham Lotz said at the end of a prayer in 2016, “The world’s not falling apart, it’s falling into place. Right at the feet of Jesus.” Jan Markel of Olive Tree Ministries also speaks this truth.
Jesus warns us in Matthew 24 not to be deceived. All kinds of things—some seemingly good, some destructive, some incomprehensible—are going to happen.
When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. (Luke 21:28, NIV)
If you believe Jesus and trust His Word, you know the sky isn’t falling. If you’re not a Believer, simply bow at His feet and ask Him to come into your heart. Open His love letter, the Bible, read the Gospels and enjoy the new life He gives you. Then, share the Good News with someone else!
Nothing new under the sun, is there? Same old tricks...different day! Thanks for the post!
Well done, writing buddy!
