We’ve all had this unpleasant experience at one time or another. See how many of these examples you relate to:
You grab a milk carton from the fridge. It feels light but you open ‘er up, anticipating those creamy splashes on your breakfast cereal. Yet, not one drop pours out.
Someone offers to save you a seat at church, a restaurant, or a movie. But when you get there every seat is taken. Surrounded by strangers, you’re lucky to find an isolated spot somewhere in the crowd.
You’re late for your appointment. You slide in behind the steering wheel, turn on the ignition, and discover the gas gauge reads “E.”
Your hairdresser says he/she no longer takes credit cards. “Oh, no worries,” you state. “I always carry cash.” But one glance inside your wallet and your face ripens like a tomato. You blurt out, “I had a few twenties right here! At least I used to.”
A friend is feeling blue. Compassion strikes, and you gather the ingredients to bake a cheery cake. Everything’s going well. Right up until you discover the empty egg carton.
You could probably chime in with your own endless, horrible “empty” dilemmas.
In his sermon on July 26, 2023, Pastor Jack Hibbs* told of an encounter he had while visiting the tomb that had briefly housed Jesus’ body. A teenager ran in, looked around, and yelled back to his friends:
“I don’t know what the big deal is, there’s nothing here.”
Exactly!!
Jesus fulfilled His promise.
Our faith celebrates something empty.
How wonderful that Jesus left indisputable proof of His death, resurrection, and ascension into Heaven . . . the empty tomb!
Our faith is inspired by this “empty.” Through Jesus’ sacrifice, eternal life has been bought for you, for me.
Do you know what the big deal is? Have you exchanged all your empties for the proof Jesus left?
If you’ve ever been disappointed by the many empties life throws at us, consider putting your faith in the risen Savior who vacated a tomb over two thousand years ago.
