My husband Bert hardly ever makes the trek upstairs to my office. Because he needed my signature, he made one of those rare appearances this morning. Once he caught his breath, his opening comment was, “your desk looks lived in.” ...I took that as a compliment!
I’ve spent years acquiring this look! From piles of papers to be read, reference books, a smattering of coffee stains, and occasional cookie crumbs, to sticky note reminders on everything. Tons of them! And without hesitation, I can tell you what's in each towering mound or if anything has been moved. Yet, aside from my reference books, if it caught fire, would I miss any of it? ...I’ll get back to you on that one!
My "lived-in" desk and countless reminders morphed to curiosity when I received this as part of an email:
Does God need reminders too?
When David penned "remember Your word to me," was he questioning the Lord’s memory?
How about when Job asked God to set a time when He’ll “remember” him? (Job 14:13)
Then, consider the thief on the cross who asked Jesus to “remember” him in paradise? How dare he remind Jesus about him!
No, God never has and never will need our reminders! Aren’t you grateful for that? Yet He’s okay with us saying such things to Him. If you don’t believe me, check out His word!
When our children were young, we’d prompt them regularly with: “If you clean your room...” “When you finish your homework...” “Let’s do this first, and then we’ll do that.”
While we may need a gentle nudge (or big push), God doesn’t need His memory jogged.
One of the things I love most about my Heavenly Father is the ability to talk with Him. I love that He waits expectantly for me, for all of us, to come and have a conversation, even argue (reason) with Him about our struggles and, yes, question the promises He’s made to us.
“‘Come now, and let us reason together,’ says the LORD. ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.’” (Is.1:18, NKJV)
There is no god that offers an invitation to pour out your heart, reveal your deepest fears and desires, or outline what’s truly on your mind. And already has the answer! Only our God. Best yet, our Heavenly Father is available 24/7. Unlike my desk, His is uncluttered.
There's no waiting line, no appointment is required.
He needs no reminder app.
We are His priority!
I love how God works in our lives constantly and He needs no reminders and we never need appointments and He never puts us on hold. How marvelous is our God! (And I'm sure He'll never take into account when our desks get cluttered!)
A great reminder, Erma! Don't they say a cluttered desk is a sign of a productive mind or something like that? You bear that statement out! Blessings, my friend!
